Top 10 (ish) Shows of 2009
This has been hard, I have a list of 17 shows in front of me, this year has been musically amazing.
-
The Get Up Kids - The Peel, Kingston - 16/08 - This was incredible everything from the moment that the crowd had to stop singing because they were too loud to the spine chilling end chords of ‘I’ll catch you”. I had almost given up on ever being able to see this band so to not only have them over but to see them at the Peel was amazing.
- Brand New - The Academy, Manchester - 23/06 - The perfect ending to birthday week. Everything about this show seemed perfect.
- Paint It Black / The Steal - The Peel, Kingston - 18/09 - This was all about the Steal, I don’t think anyone who was there was in any pretense about this and looking back on it, it was the perfect ending. I have lost count of the amount of shoulder grabs, hugs and the times I turned around and saw one of my friends with the biggest grins on their face. This was not for mourning the end of the band but enjoying that moment. Downer of the show being loads of kid’s ODing on K outside afterwards.
- Broadway Calls - Fighting Cocks, Kingston - 05/09 - I had trouble of thinking which BC show to put in here but given the venue I think this was the best. It was the end of summer and having spent the day before the show sitting by the river and listening to Jeff play uke summer ended wonderfully.
- Banner Pilot, Joey Cape, Jon Snodgrass, Cobra Skulls, Teenage Bottlerocket - Europa Night Club, Brooklyn. New York - 25/10 - The opening band (who’s name escapes me) played for far too long meaning that Banner Pilot had a shortened set but they still managed to play an incredible set. Joey Cape and Jon Snodgrass played both songs solo and together, it was a winning combination. I found out about this show through Banner Pilot’s myspace and had no idea of the full line up until the day of the show, i’m glad I ventured into Brooklyn for this one.
- H2O - Fighting Cocks, Kingston - 12/08 - this was probably the hottest show I have ever been to, the middle of summer + a tiny venue = HEAT. It was amazing to see the band in this venue and I know how unlikely it is that this will happen again.
-
The Fest 8 - Gainesville, Florida - 30/10-01/11 - I LOVE TO FEST. (there really is nothing more that needs saying here)
- Punk’n’Bowl 2 - Bloomsbury Bowling Lanes - 10/05 - as with Fest this probably needs no explanation, it was Punk’n’Bowl.
- Chuck Ragan - Moho, Manchester - 27/08 - Chuck’s voice was nearly gone but he gave it all he had and what he had was amazing.
- New Found Glory - Rescue Rooms, Nottingham - 30/08 - NFG in a tiny room, playing the songs requested via twitter, I can’t really think of much else to add.
- Bouncing Souls - The Academy, Islington - 17/06. The begining of birthday week, best way to begin.
- The Steal - Fighting Cocks, Kingston - 01/01
- Alkaline Trio - Koko, Camden - 17/01
- Shook Ones - Fighting Cocks, Kingston - 30/04
- The Failsafe Warehouse Day 1 (inc Menzingers & Crime In Stereo) - Gainesville - 30/10
- North Lincoln - The Windmill, Brixton - 10/10
- Forgetters & The Bomb - Generation Records, New York - 24/10
